How to choose your home colours to suit the light and the space

How natural light, room size and materials change the final colour, with practical steps to choose a harmonious palette before you buy paint.

Choosing colours is one of the most influential interior design decisions, because it changes how a place feels, how spacious it looks and how its lighting works. Here are a few simple steps to help you decide before buying paint.

1. Start with natural light
A room that gets morning sun shows a colour differently from a room that never gets direct sun. Cool shades (grey-green, light blue) look colder in dim rooms, while warm shades (beige, sand, clay) feel more welcoming. So do not judge a colour from a small swatch in the shop.

2. Try the colour on the wall itself
Put a fairly large sample on the wall and watch it in the morning, at noon and in the evening under artificial light. That change through the day is what you will actually live with.

3. Match the colour to the size of the room
Light colours help small spaces look wider and brighter. Dark colours add depth and warmth but need good lighting, and usually suit large rooms or a single feature wall.

4. Keep to a limited palette
Three colours are usually enough: a main colour for walls and large surfaces, a secondary colour for furniture and curtains, and an accent for accessories and cushions. This gives the home visual harmony and makes later changes easier.

5. Do not forget materials and floors
The colour of the floor, the wood and the marble affects how light bounces onto the walls. Choose paint with the floor, door and kitchen samples in front of you, not each item on its own.

If you are undecided, a designer can help you pick a palette that suits the light in each room and your lifestyle before work starts.
